Get off my lawn!

It's official: I'm old. How do I know this? Well, a couple weeks ago I came across the picture on the right, thinking it would be funny to post when my biological odometer rolled over. Then a few days passed and I couldn't remember why I needed to keep the picture around. So I kept it lying around, remembering that I was going to use it for something, but forgetting what specifically.

At any rate, all I'm asking for this time around is a pair of velcro nurse shoes, a cane in the shape of a Bembo font "f", and a Seniorenspielplatz.

Confessions of a political junkie

I admit it. I actually enjoy all this political foo-ha-ha. I enjoy all the spotlight our downtrodden state has gotten. I enjoy all the contradictory ads on tv. I enjoy getting political junk mail. I enjoy hearing a news story about a political candidate (any of them), then reading about it again from a different side or angle, then another side. Not because of any particular candidate, party, or issue. No, I've enjoyed following political tomfoolery for decades.

Most normal people shake their heads in disgust at all the much-ado-ishness every election cycle. Not me. I enjoy a lively debate, even if both (or all) sides still don't see eye to eye in the end.

There. I've said it. Now 11 more steps and I'm good to go.

Cavemanese

So the other day I was talking with the mrs about something when I joked around about how "English is degenerating" and pretty soon we'll all start just be speaking in cavemen grunts.

Given my background (my major that is, not necessarily my caveman ways), I couldn't leave it alone. I got to thinking what would be the least a caveman (or future, degenerate, texting, cavepersons) could utter and still be considered able to communicate via language. For something to be considered Language, linguists say it needs to have a few basic requirements:
  1. It needs to be able to convey ideas that are not necessarily present at the time and place of the utterance.
  2. It needs to allow for a potentially infinite set of utterances.
This precludes all animal communication, as far as we currently know.

Anyways, I've boiled down the bare minimum that cavemanese needs:
  1. uh
  2. silence
These two sounds can allow for the same expressiveness, infiniteness, and subtlety, as English or any other natural language. How, one might ask? All we need is a way to distinguish one thing from another thing. That's it. In this case, we have a schwa ("uh") and silence. From these two objects we can build up a language, the same way that Mike's beautiful digital photos are made up of ones and zeros.

Let's try building cavemanese. First we need a lexicon. For simplicity sake, we can use the basic ideas behind Huffman coding and data compression:

(silence): word-boundary
uh: the
uh-uh: to
uh-uh-uh: with
uh-uh-uh-uh: in
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh: I
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh: (genitive-marker)
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh: eat
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh: like
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh: cave
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh: mammoth
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh: sauce bourguignonne
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh: cavemanese
...

So let's speak cavemanese now. For simplicity sake, let's assume that cavemanese syntax is similar to English, although we could easily use other word-order configurations. We'll transcribe silence with a space:
uh-uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh

"I like to eat mammoth with sauce bourguignonne in my cave."
So the next time someone says that English is degenerating, you can tell them "uh-uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh!"

Beware of the latest email scam

Beware of the latest scam circulating on the internet:

Dear American:
I need to ask you to support a urgent secret business relatonship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.

I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America. My country has had crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of funds of 700 billion dollars US. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most profitable to you.

I am working with Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you may know him as leader of American banking deregulation movement in the 1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.

This is a matter of great urgancy. We need a blank check. We need the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfering these funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under survellance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for an reliable and trustworty person who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transfered.

Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to au-parachute@treasury.gov so that we may transfer your commision for this transaction. After I recieve that information, I will respond with a detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the funds.

Yours Faithfully,
Minister of Treasury Henry Paulson

Why does this blog exist?

I guess I should mention why I'm writing this blog. I always thought I'd be the last person on earth to get a blog: First the word blog sounds dumb. Second most blogs are drivel. Third I always wondered why someone would make what I considered to be nothing more than an online journal.

Well, yes, the word blog still sounds dumb, and this blog is probably adding more drivel. But this won't be an online journal. I want to write about stuff I'm interested in, rather than "Today I did this, then that ...".

Since I'm interested in a wide variety of things, there's probably going to be lots of stuff that you're not interested in, but maybe some stuff here and there that might catch your interest.

School of Idiotic Language Design

I can't believe somebody thought these were good ideas:
  • Negation in Prolog: \+

  • Floating point arithmetic in Python:
    >>> 0.1+0.2
    0.30000000000000004

  • Commented lines in Tcl must be syntactically correct. Thus the following line will produce an error:
    # if {$foo == 1} {

1st p0st

1st p0st!
